Train Travel From New Delhi to Dehra Dun

Yumi, have we looked into train travel in India? The Jan Shatabdi train runs daily from New Delhi to Dehradun. The schedule is as follows:

Delhi to Dehradun (Our flight arrives at 12:50PM)
Lv 3:30PM, AR 9:10PM

Dehradun to Delhi (Our flight leaves at 2:10PM)
Lv 5:10AM, AR 11:05AM

The train schedule seems to meet our flight schedule. I don't know the cost. The buses could pick up/drop us off in Dehradun and we don't have to worry about them breaking down or the roads being closed.

  1. From what I found on the Woodstock website, the roundtrip train ride should be around $24.

  2. If we are going to travel by train. We need to pay the extra and go first class. In US dollars its not much but it will make a huge difference. I dont think we want to travel coach or cheap on this train.

  3. I looked into the train option (couple of weeks ago)but have come to a conclusion that traveling via boys' home vehicle was the best option. #1 Reason: not guaranteed that we'll make it out of customs by departure time - last time, it took us more than 3 hours. Next train gets to Dehra Dun next day. With car, we have control over our schedule...less variables.
#2 Reason: We may have to stop by Delhi to buy computer & equipment before heading to Mussoorie.

and for some reason, I feel and the leaders in India feel most at peace with the car option.

But please let me know how others are feeling about it...we can definitely travel by train on our way back.
