Life Journal Reading for Sunday, March 4, 2012

Now that the team is in India (15-1/2 hours ahead of us), I will be posting the journal entries a day ahead. So don't get too confused, like I always do!

Numbers 34-36; Mark 11
“The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.” --Mark 11:18

Jesus entered Jerusalem to the shouts of “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” There was excitement in the air, and the anticipation that He who was to redeem the world had come. Victory at last! But not everyone was happy. The ones who enjoyed the status quo and reaped the benefits of it were not happy at all. Jesus was cramping their style and was a threat to their existence. He was winning away the hearts of the people from them with his insightful teaching, as one with authority.

Be aware that not everyone will be happy and excited to see you. You represent change. You represent excitement in our Lord Jesus. You carry his name, just like the ones who threw down their coats and waved palm branches with shouts of "Hosanna!" You are rocking the boat to some people, and they don’t like it. They are looking for ways to discredit you, to dishonor you, to minimize you. They will be jealous because of your demonstrated love, compassion, mercy, and grace shown to the orphans, students, staff, and each other. They are afraid. And the one behind it all, Satan, does not want you to succeed.

So stay united in purpose. Submit your egos to Pastor Creighton and the team leaders. Let God be God, and your entry into India will be triumphant!

Heavenly Father and God of us all, we thank you for the opportunity that lies before us. We are here in India to proclaim the name of Jesus and to be living witnesses of your love. We are anxious and excited about how you will use each one of us, and we know that not everyone will be happy to see us. We seek your protection from those who want us to fail. We cling to you more closely today than we ever have before. Help us to extend grace, love, and mercy freely. May humility, holiness, and honor be present in every thought and action. Remind us victory was already achieved when Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose three days later.

A Memorable Day Out with Ben

I have a story to tell you, it happened in November of 2011. I was returning from Delhi to Mussoorie by a local bus. The bus was pretty empty--I had a full seat all to myself. But then after traveling for a while, I had to change my place and sit beside a young man as the bus conductor wanted to have my seat. Change is always annoying! I could have done a number of things while sitting in that seat: maybe take a nap or read a magazine or listen to the music.

After some time, however, I found out that the gentleman beside whom I had to sit happened to be a business man and very friendly. He was from Delhi and was going to Dehradun on business. It was a Sunday, so knowing he was going to have to stay in a hotel, I offered him to come to Mussoorie and stay with us. He readily accepted that offer. I love doing that, for I see the Lord’s hand in every small thing.

So this gentleman, whose name by the way is Vinny, comes to my home--a stranger whom I had no reason to bring to my home. He went to Dehradun the next day morning, but came back to Mussoorie to be with us as his work didn’t finish. In fact, he had to call his senior business partners during his two days' stay in Mussoorie, and two of them came and stayed along with him for another day.

Since then I had not met him again until yesterday, when I came to Delhi to receive Ben. Life is full of surprises! Knowing that I would be in Delhi, he came just to see us and took us around the city to many places. I had no agenda as to what we would be doing while in Delhi, but Vinny made our day very special. I thought he would just come and meet us somewhere and then go back to his usual work. But he had kept this day free so that he could take us around Delhi for a cruise. We had a wonderful day. Photos are coming…

Yeah almost there!!

Life Journal Reading for Saturday, March 3, 2012

Today's journal entry is shared by Jill Matro, 11/07 travel team member and mentor of numerous female travel team members as well.

Numbers 32,33; Mark 10
The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon— the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan”... The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the LORD has said. We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.” --Numbers 32:1-4, 31-32

The Israelites had been journeying toward the promise of abundant land for more years than they cared to count. Just like all the rest of the Israelites, the Reubenites and Gadites were weary, and when they saw the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they decided THAT would be their Canaan. “...this side of the Jordan” was going to be good enough. They had come all that way, through persecution and the desert, to the place of compromise. They even promised to fight the battle in Canaan, but would forego the prize, if only they could claim what they could see with their human eyes.

Father, You have called your mission team out of the land of comfort to claim territory for you. Protect their hearts from compromise. Their human senses will perceive opportunity for worldly victory, but don't let them fall short of Canaan. Holy Spirit, ignite their passion to claim total victory or nothing. Drive home in their hearts that they have come all this way, do not lose the battle in sight of the finish line. Lord, embolden them all to throw themselves wholeheartedly once again towards the true goal, Your promise land. Through the blood of Jesus that covers us in victory! Amen.

Devotional Reading for Friday, March 2nd

Each year, we send with the traveling team a "survival guide" filled with tips and notes but especially with the New Hope Life Journal Reading Plan. Brothers and sisters who are inextricably tied to India or to missions read ahead and share their insights so that the travel team is reading them in real time.

Today's journal entry is shared by Carolyn Pace, 11/08 Travel Team member, perpetual prayer team member, and mom of current travel team member Geary Udagawa.

Numbers 30,31; Mark 9
“Salt is good (beneficial), but if salt has lost its saltiness, how will you restore (the saltiness to) it? Have salt within yourselves, and be at peace and live in harmony with one another.” --Mark 9:50

Salt is a symbol of preservation and God's purifying power. Leviticus says “all offerings you shall season with salt.” Some people have been described as Salt of the Earth, meaning steadfast. Salt can cure, preserve, and add flavor or taste. God uses salt to describe an inner state of being in His people. He created salt and all of its benefits and qualities. The important message for me here is to not loose my saltiness. This means do not become insipid or flat, tasteless, lack liveliness, force, or spirit. Furthermore, Mark says be at peace and in unity with one another.

As you travel to India, Mark 9:50 is an amazing reminder to be filled with the Holy Spirit and to be sprinkled and seasoned with salt. Keep in you the salt that preserves and purifies you, a taste that is pleasing to God. Do not loose your saltiness, for it is God's purifying power that sets you apart from the world. Deeply care for one another, be in unity at all times and at all costs, and have peace in your hearts. Show love, kindness, and mercy to those waiting for you in India.

Heavenly Father, thank you for our team of brothers and sisters. May they not rush ahead of you, for you will go before them to protect and guide them, and you will be their rear guard. Purify their hearts that they will be filled by the spirit. Hold them in the palm of your hand that they may go out with power, peace and great joy. May your servants respond to their call with unity, boldness and humility, and may the vision set forth for this team come to pass with great victory. May their speech at all times be gracious and seasoned with salt to know how to answer a question and to encourage one another. May there be new souls given over to the Kingdom and many old and new relationships be nurtured and restored. Bless and keep the children of India, both at the orphanage and college, and may your anointing be their covering. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

P.S. Four years ago I stepped on a plane to India. Today, I am excited and proud of all of you–including my son, Geary–who have chosen to give your time and your hearts to expand God's Kingdom for His glory.
